Why Gmail Rocks

Email hosts are either very expensive or completely unreliable so neither option suits us or our smaller clients who don’t have a requirement for an inhouse enterprise solution.

It’s also a lot of fun when Microsoft Exchange encounters a problem or you have an outage at your datacenter and every single client’s emails stop working all at once. Calls and emails flood in, work stops while you deal with a emergency situation and no one expects to pay for a technical issue being resolved.

I also think exchange is also very overpriced, a misuse of time to setup and maintain on the server and far too complicated to make setting up on a local client fun for anyone.

Just some of the reasons why Gmail rocks:

  1. It’s free
  2. It supports POP and IMAP which are both quick and easy to setup in email clients
  3. The built in spam filtering does an amazing job
  4. You get 7.5 GB of storage
  5. Emails are grouped together by conversation
  6. Easily access via webmail or a client
  7. Built in features in webmail such as out of office replies, signatures and keyboard shortcuts
  8. Webmail supports accessing multiple accounts in one place
  9. You can tag emails with labels and use multiple labels for cross referencing
  10. You can automatically forward mail from your gmail address and keep a copy in your inbox, delete the original mail, archive it or label it
  11. Offline Mode is available so you can access your mail even when you are not connected to the internet
  12. Choice of themes for webmail
  13. Gmail labs provides optional features developed by users. Some are quirky and gimmicky and others are invaluable such as Advanced IMAP controls and canned responses
  14. Using Google Apps you can point your own domain at your account so you get all the benefits of a Gmail account but with email addresses @yourowndomain.com
  15. You can then have up to 200 users per domain with umlimited aliases. You can request more if required.
  16. You can add domain aliases so yourname@ works with multiple domains you own
  17. You can change the Google logo to your own for a more personal user experience
  18. If you run out of space you an upgrade your account to 25GB storage for only $50 a year and you get other benefits such as an SLA and 24/7 support
  19. You only get a 99.9% uptime guarantee with the premier edition but, it’s Google. Downtime is very rare and quickly resolved when it does occur
  20. New services and features are added regularly and as with everything Google they are normally useful, easy and exceed expectations
  21. And more…

Why are you still using hosted exchange?!!!??

My Google Analytics Feedback Gets Noticed

A big thanks to Avinash for picking up on my Google Analytics feedback and passing it onto the GA team to deal with as mentioned on the most recent Google web analytics tv.

Whilst it’s possible to now create up to 20 goals in a profile it’s still only possible to include the first 4 in a custom report. How long will it be until they fix this and is there a workaround that can be used in the meantime?

It’s pretty amazing that with goals being such an important part of reporting and analysis that this has been overlooked for so long by Google and surprising that more noise hasn’t been made about it from users.

Avinash seemed just as amazed that it wasn’t possible and called the feature ’absolutely key’ and ’criminal’ that they coulnd’t be added into the reports.

It’s great though to see how proactive the GA team are and how valuable users feedback is to them (If you want to submit questions for web analytics tv just add them to the GA moderator site) rather than trying to dictate how the service will be developed and forcing users to shoehorn how it works into their real world application of the tool.

If you are interested in web analytics then I thoroughly recommend; Web Analytics 2.0 by Avanish Kaushik. As if it wasn’t worth it’s wait in gold anyway 100% of the author’s proceeds are donated to 2 charities, The Smile Train and Ekal Vidyalaya. Analytics enlightenment and helping those in need.

We approach logo design by selecting a typeface first

When it comes to designing a new logo or brand identity each designer has their own preference for how to approach it.

Some designers use note pad and pen and doodle and scribble until they get something to work with then onto the computer they go. Others dive right into their favourite design program and start cranking away until something falls into place. Other designers will sift through books/magazines/websites/stock imagery and any other reference material they have lying around to get a kick start.

Personally, I tend to use a mix of all these methods but the one thing I always tend to lean towards is choosing a typeface first of all. This to me is one of the most important parts of creating a new identity and brand.

Of course the actual brand/company name can carry a lot of weight when it comes to font choice, for example you’re not going to start sifting through your light weight sans serif type faces when researching a design for a new Clown College logo and likewise, you shouldn’t find yourself trawling through all those great hand written fonts when it comes to a design for a top of the line jewellery store. There are the odd occasions when somethign off the wall can work really well but there are always a few things you should keep in mind when it comes to choosing your typeface:

  • Will the weight of the typeface suit, compliment and reinforce the brand?
  • How well will the typeface sit with a graphic/icon that may need incorporated into the design?
  • Will your choice of typeface seem dated within the next year or so as design trends change? It’s essential to think ahead and give your design longevity

It’s also important to make sure you are not “accidently” copying something you have seen or liked before. This can be hard when it comes to design as our influences tend to be the things that really make an impression on us and this can sometimes lead to them creeping into your own designs.

It is always good to take your time, step away from the design after a bit of time and look at it again with fresh eyes, even send it round some friends or colleagues to get feedback before sending it to the client or review.

Why you should have a Google Business Listing

Have you created a Google Business Listing for your business yet? If not then you are missing out on a opportunity.

We still encounter a lot of SME’s we do work for that either don’t realise that they could have a business listing on Google or have just never got round to adding one.

It’s really easy to do and hardly takes any time at all.

Top benefits of a Google Business Listing:

  1. Exposure in Google
Google displays the business results near the top of page 1 based on Google Maps Listings if someone searches for a combination of a service and place. For instance, look at this example where we searched for ‘Edinburgh airpot parking’. The business listings actually rank above all the natural results. This means even if you don’t have an SEO budget or strong web presence you can still be listed at the top of the page above the top ranking organic competitor.
  2. Business Listings Are Prominent
The businss listings returned in the results are arguably more predominant on the page than the paid Adwords are. Without even spending money you can be acquiring the traffic your competitors are paying to be exposed to.
  3. It’s completely free
You will have to register a Google account if you don’t have one, do an address or phone number verification and create your business listing but all it costs is a bit of time – and normally less than a coffee break.
  4. Secure Top Position
If you get a listing added before your competitors for your service and location then you will always appear before them as entries are listed in the order they were added.
  5. Multilple Offices Supported
You can list multiple business locations from within a single account. Perfect if you have more than one office.
  6. Directions Made Easy
An accurate road map with directions ensures that your prospective clients can find you easily. They can even toggle between map and satellite view.
  7. Expanding Services
Google have announced improvements to the service we can expect in the future such as integration with mobiles, map links within results listings and the creation of coupons/vouchers that users can print off and bring with them.

It is also very likely that other local directories will feed off of the Google Business Listings so your listing will start appearing elsewhere as a pleasant consequence.

If you want to create your Google Business Listing it can be done in a few easy steps:

  1. Sign in to the Google Local Business Center.
You will need to use an existing Google account or create a new one.
  2. Supply your business information.
Select up to 5 categories that best describe your business. Custom categories are acceptable but you must include at least 1 predefined category.
  3. Preview and verify your listing.
To confirm your business location, you can either receive a pin code over the phone or by SMS which you enter and your listing will be live within 12 hours or Google sends you a postcard with a confirmation code which normally takes 2-3 weeks.

Don’t procrastinate. The free, enhanced listing exposure can do wonders for your business and even if you are not desperate for traffic just yet it is worth securing your position in the business listing results before your competitors do.
